I want tighter gun control, but I also respect folks who are reluctant about it. I want higher taxes on the wealthy, but I also respect folks who don’t. I’d like the NRA and Grover Norquist to have less control over our legislative process, but they aren’t evil, and folks who support their positions aren’t either. We can disagree without being hateful. At no point in my life has anyone who was shouting at me ever convinced me of anything. If we want a more civil society, the first thing we have to do is behave as if we’re living in a civil society. Change starts with you.
