Lyle Lovett

Learn from wife that a mom from the school is selling her Lyle Lovett tickets for tomorrow night. Ask for more information, but be told that she only knows the price. What?! Can she seriously expect you to make a spontaneous decision to purchase these tickets at the last minute without knowing more about the seller and the circumstances? There are so many unanswered questions! For example, is the seller the kind of person who would grab just two tickets, or did she plan this with a giant group? And if she planned it with a group, do we know them? Are they awesome, or are they a bunch of vampires (not the cool Edward kind, but the dickish Lestat kind)? And will we be expected to attend a tedious pre-party and/or post-party that we don’t really want to attend? Or worse, will we be excluded from an awesome pre-party and/or post-party that we do really want to attend? And if there is a party, should we bring a bottle of wine? (If so, this must be factored into the cost of the tickets). Or are they more of a growler-of-kombucha kind of crowd? (If so, see thoughts above regarding tedious parties).

And then there’s the concert itself. Lyle Lovett is fine of course, but absent this news, would we really have chosen to purchase tickets on our own initiative? Clearly not, because we didn’t. Dollar for entertainment dollar, might we be better served by investing in other alternatives?

And what about all the after school stuff that goes down on Wednesdays? And also . . .

Suddenly remember that your wife has been asking to see the movie Brotherhood for months – a request that you have heretofore ignored. And now, based on information and belief (because you still haven’t actually done anything to make that movie date happen), it is only showing in a theater that’s an hour away, thereby requiring a two hour round trip to see a three hour movie.

Agree to spontaneous ticket purchase.

Begin playing Lyle Lovett to remember his work. Get excited. Realize that you should have planned this all along. Feel satisfied that in the end you made the right choice.

Learn that the tickets have already been sold.

Sigh. Begin looking at movie times.
