ALS challenge.

You and your wife are issued the ice bucket challenge. And of course you’ll do it (and write the check) because you’re good sports and compassionate people. And yet, it’s totally not your style, and it’s gonna be really unpleasant, and like a chain letter, you’re supposed to impose this damn thing on three other people – three people who are gonna be stuck in this same quandary. And you wonder if Sexy Windbreaker can be one. Or maybe the dog? And Kathleen of course, who welched on that one bet and totally deserves this. And is this really helping ALS, or do people just want to see other people splashed with ice water? And you’re groaning and puzzling over your options – and also stalling, because you might as well get the benefit of the full 24 hours before enduring this indignity – when your kids learn of your plight. And a gleam appears in their eyes, and they want to hold the bucket, and they couldn’t be more thrilled. And they giggle their way through breakfast and smirk during the drive to school. And whether or not you’re helping ALS (you probably are), you’re amusing your children. And that alone makes it worth doing.
